THE NEW MUTANTS: A LATE REVIEW

Image
When theaters were announcing a gradual re-opening here in Kenya, I was elated to jump at the first opportunity to sit in a dark room and be entertained. So, on a Saturday morning, I woke up early and rushed to another part of town, and found that only The New Mutants was showing. No worries, I was looking forward to it anyway; turns out I was the only one in the theater that morning; Enough of the backstory, now to the meat on the bone. Premise The New Mutants is a story of a young lady, Dani Moonstar, who finds herself in a facility with other mutants that’s intended to help them get better, but in reality is a prison meant to keep them there under the watchful eye of Dr. Reyes, who has her own agenda for them. Likes I’ve always loved the tone of the X-men films, and this one is no different. It didn’t feel like a superhero movie, but rather a mystery-type thing.(Not a horror, like we were promised) I liked the connection to Logan, where the Essex facility was...

ALL ABOUT VISUALS

Technology is something the film industry can never be grateful enough for. From being able to reanimate long gone actors in movies, show robots transforming into cars and have humans display super powered strength, all this just adds onto the cinematic experience. The first time I saw these guys transforming…OMG.😍 When I went to watch the retelling of Disney’s timeless classic, the Lion King, I tried not to judge it in comparison with its predecessor and to see how it was as a standalone film. The reactions on the animals’ faces was so devoid of any human emotion(maybe that was the whole point) that the gut wrenching scene of Mufasa’s death had my stomach very settled on sight. Granted, Simba’s voice actor was convincing enough to get me to look away(I still do to this day), the initial impact was lost, and the same was true wi...

I love superhero movies like I love breathing: they are integral to my life. I love watching people with strange powers flit across the screen, displaying their abilities and using them for the greater good of mankind, as they also struggle to fit in with the same mankind. I also love their villains, albeit cartoonish, because they need a challenge to their supposed superiority. One of these heroes is Superman: THE superhero. almost every young boy out there dreamt of being a superhero just like him, as he stood tall and strong in stature and his ideals.   Now, I wasn’t born in the 70’s or the 80’s, so the only portrayals I knew was that of Tim Daly in the Adventures of Superman, Dean Cain in Lois & Clark, Tom Welling in Smallville and Henry Cavill in Man of Steel. I single out Brandon Routh in Superman Returns because, as I’ve been told, he was meant to mirror Christoper Reeves’ version, which many regard as the template of what Superman should be like. Agreed, h...
